Much Anticipated Twin Cities Donut Tour

As anyone who follows me on Facebook or Twitter knows, my fiancé and I have been touring the Twin Cities eating donuts and gratuitously posting them. We’re creating quite the reputation for ourselves! In an effort to make our gluttony altruistic, here’s A Donut Lover’s Guide to the Twin Cities’ Best Donuts!

  • A Bakers Wife

They excel in old school donuts (sugar, powdered, etc). You will find them on any list of the Twin Cities best donut shops.

  • Angel Food Bakery & Coffee Bar

These guys do such a good job that we hired them to cater donuts for our wedding. And guess what? They have not one but TWO versions of the famous “cronut” to choose from. Get both.

  • Glam Doll Donuts

Located on Eat Street in Minneapolis, it is one of the top gourmet donut shops in the Twin Cities. Bonus: they’re open late (til 1 AM Thursday through Saturday)! Try the apple fritter – with or without bacon. Best in town.

  • Granny’s Donuts

A very good traditional donut shop, located in South St. Paul. Favorite donut: blueberry glazed. One of the best in town.

  • Lynn on Bryant

Not technically a donut shop, they sell only one donut: a buttermilk-apple cider cake donut (and donut holes) sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar. It’s as good as it sounds.

  • Mel-O-Glaze Bakery

Hole-in-the-wall traditional glazed donut shop located in South Minneapolis. Come for the free-roaming cat, stay for the GNR blasting from the kitchen.

  • Mill City/Kingfield Farmers’ Markets

Be sure to check the calendar before you go, but if you pick the right day you can find the Chef Shack food truck slinging deliciously spiced mini-donuts fresh out of the fryer.

  • Mojo Monkey Donuts

St. Paul’s best gourmet donut shop, they switch up the selection every day which keeps it interesting. Too small of a space to hang out, but it’s worth going for the strawberry almond old fashioned donut if you can get it.

  • P.J. Murphy’s Bakery

A hole-in-the-wall donut shop in St. Paul that’s worth stopping by if you’re in the neighborhood. Try the blueberry fritter if you do.

  • Sarah Jane’s Bakery

Great bakery located in NE Minneapolis, with an excellent selection that extends beyond just donuts.

  • SugaRush

A hidden gem on University Avenue in St. Paul (not too far from the Capitol). Get the cinnamon wheel – you won’t be disappointed.

  • Target Field

Best mini-donuts around, but you have to go to a ballgame to get them. You’ll have a couple venues to choose from, but go to the one next to the State Fair food stand for the best.

  • YoYo Donuts and Coffee Bar

The one that started it all, YoYo is the only one on the list not located in Minneapolis or St. Paul (it’s in Minnetonka). Great gourmet donuts, but get there early because they bake fresh and usually sell out!
